Sammie Jo Coffin riding Zabantos tops the Newcomers second round.

Dorset showground held the EquestrianClearance.com Newcomers second round this weekend and despite of overnight rain and continuing wind and rain throughout the day the competition was excellent. Thirty combinations braved the weather for the chance to qualify for the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) and the Cushionbed British Showjumping Scope Festival. With only two HOYS tickets up for grabs the final jump off saw some fierce competition with four combinations fighting out for the top two spots.

It was twenty four year old Sammie Jo Coffin from Cornwall who took the win riding James Luker’s seven year old stallion Zabantos. Jumping three clears with a jump off time of 45.76 seconds Sammie Jo took the first HOYS ticket.

Taking the second HOYS tickets was Wiltshire based Danny Dunne. Twenty three year old Danny was riding his mothers (Gerry) seven year old bay gelding Zoro ID who also jumped a treble clear but in a slightly slower jump off time of 46.78 seconds.

Having the unlucky draw of first to go in the final jump off was Gloucester based Angela Thompson riding Tony Cockshutt’s six year old mare Calrina WBF. Lowering two poles in a time of 47.40 seconds meant Angela ended up in third place picking up the third of five Cushionbed British Showjumping Scope Festival tickets.

At the other end of the jump off draw was Somerset based Alexandra Coats riding her own seven year old bay stallion Quisto Van De Helle Z. Knowing what was needed for the win and guaranteed a Cushionbed British Showjumping Scope Festival ticket Alexandra retired after lowering few poles which left her in fourth place.

The final Cushionbed British Showjumping Scope Festival ticket went to fifth placed Helen Tredwell from Buckingham riding Philip Tuckwell’s seven year old liver chestnut mare Concordia II.
